The idea to start Umoya Networks was conceived in 2002 when a group of post graduate students at the University of Cape Town selected the African Children's Choir as the subject of their task to develop a business plan. Ray Barnett, founder of the African Children's Choir had requested help with the IT infrastructure for his organisation and those students (among them Peter Beretta) put their heads together to try to come up with a suitable solution for them.
The challenge of providing broadband access in Africa became of particular interest to Peter and hence it became the subject of a technical report for his post grad studies in 2003 (Low Cost Broadband Wireless Access for Underserviced Areas). Having spent two years researching wireless technology, it became a passion and led to the formation of Umoya Networks.
Umoya Networks is unusual in that it is what is known as a "Kingdom focused company" (the primary purpose of which is not to enrich the shareholders, but to fund projects which further the establishment of God's kingdom on earth). The original vision of fostering broadband wireless telecommunications in Africa has expanded to embrace satellite communications on the one side and innovative software to improve administrative and management effectiveness, particularly in education, on the other.
The Umoya team believe that success is a journey not just a destination. There is an obvious Christian ethic and faith at Umoya, worn on the sleeve as it were, but not in your face. They believe that what they are becoming in the process of achieving success is more important than simply achieving their goals. Therefore they place a high importance on coaching, "discipleship" and training in the workplace. They are concerned about the way they deal with each other, their customers, partners and suppliers. They also believe that they have a responsibility in terms of their company profits in that a percentage is used to support projects such as the African Children's Choir, the Living Hope Community Centre and others.
Umoya Networks has grown into a team of competent professionals delivering communications network and IT solutions to corporates and governments across Southern Africa. Umoya staff are passionate people, people of integrity whose word is their bond and who are always up for new challenges in finding appropriate technological solutions to their customers needs.
Umoya; quietly making IT work.
